Potato Please Money Guide: Income and Waste
How Potato Please pays you: potato value, sack totals, streak bonuses, waste penalties and the real cost of Hard mode.
A clean potato in Potato Please is worth about $0.50, a 48-potato sack is worth about $25, and every fifth clean potato adds a streak bonus. The real money lesson is simpler: waste costs more than speed earns. A fast run with deep cuts can pay less than a slow run with clean peels.

The game does not show a detailed income statement. You see a payment at the end of a shift and a total in the terminal. This page breaks down the numbers you can actually verify and the decisions that change them.
How much is one potato worth?
The base value is about $0.50 per clean potato. That number is not fixed for the whole run because streak bonuses, shift multipliers, and difficulty change the final payment. It is still the right anchor for early decisions.
| Quantity | Base value | What it buys |
|---|---|---|
| 1 potato | about $0.50 | Nothing on its own |
| 10 potatoes | about $5 | Kitchen Table after one more sack |
| 48 potatoes | about $25 | Half of a Carry Capacity upgrade |
| 480 potatoes | about $240 | Almost one Auto Peel Machine |
| 1,000 potatoes | about $500 | Steel Knife, table, and Crank with change |
The first Auto Peel Machine at $280 is roughly 560 clean potatoes. That sounds like a lot until you compare it with the time saved. A machine that peels while you carry and sort is worth more than 560 manual peels.
How does the streak bonus work?
The streak counter tracks consecutive clean potatoes. Every five potatoes adds a bonus to the run. The exact multiplier is not shown as a single number in the HUD, so the practical rule is to protect the streak rather than chase a specific percentage.
A wasted potato breaks the rhythm even if it does not reset the counter. The safe habit is to finish a potato before starting another. Half-peeled potatoes on the board are the most common cause of accidental throws and deep cuts.
The streak is also why the Steel Knife matters. At $2.70 it is cheap, and cleaner cuts preserve the streak. A Rusty Knife run with a broken streak earns less than a Steel Knife run with a steady one.
What does waste actually cost?
Waste has two costs. The first is the lost potato: a deep cut removes flesh that could have been sold. The second is the lost time: you still have to finish the potato, but the payment is lower.
A potato with a deep gouge is not always rejected. The game counts the delivered potato, but the payment is reduced. That is why a run can look successful on the counter and still pay poorly.
The 1.0.1 patch fixed several bugs that caused potatoes to escape through the output chute or the wall fans. Those losses were not player mistakes, but they still affected the run. If a potato disappears now, check the output lane and the Troubleshooting page before assuming it was waste.
The counter shows how many potatoes you delivered. The payment screen shows what they were worth. A high count with low payment means waste, broken streaks, or a difficulty penalty.
How much does Hard mode reduce income?
Hard mode halves the payment and removes peeling tolerance. That makes every wasted cut twice as expensive in relative terms, and it makes the quota take longer. The 20 achievements do not require Hard mode, so there is no completion reason to play it on a first run.
| Mode | Payment | Peeling tolerance | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Full | Normal | First completion, achievements |
| Hard | 50 percent | Strict | Challenge runs after the story |
The game's Hard mode was changed in 1.0.1 to use Strict peeling rather than No Mercy. If you read an older guide that describes a different rule set, check the current difficulty screen before starting.
What is the fastest way to earn money?
The fastest legitimate route is to remove walking before you remove peeling. Carry Capacity, the Kitchen Table, and the Sack Gantry all reduce the time between a potato and the chute. The Auto Peel Machine removes the peeling itself.
A practical money route looks like this:
- Buy Carry Capacity and the Steel Knife.
- Run clean shifts until you can afford the Kitchen Table.
- Buy the Crank Peel Machine and feed it continuously.
- Save for the first Auto Peel Machine at $280.
- Add the Sack Gantry before the second machine.
- Buy Overclock only when every barrel is busy.
Do not spend money on the Claw Crane or Cableway before step 5. They move potatoes, but they do not increase the number of clean potatoes you can deliver per minute.
The automation layout → explains where to put each machine. The quota guide → covers the endgame, where money stops mattering and throughput becomes the only score.
FAQ
How much money do you need for the quota?
The quota is measured in potatoes, not money. You need 60,000 delivered potatoes. The money you earn along the way buys the machines and capacity that make 60,000 possible.
Does throwing a potato away count as waste?
Yes. A thrown potato is not delivered, and the time spent carrying it is lost. Throw only when a potato is stuck or ruined.
Is Hard mode worth the extra money?
Hard mode pays 50 percent, so it is not a money strategy. Play it for the challenge after you have finished the story and most achievements.
What is the best money upgrade?
Carry Capacity first, then the Auto Peel Machine. Capacity removes trips; the machine removes peeling. The Steel Knife is the best cheap purchase in between.
