Potato Please Puppy Guide: Good Boy and Dog Food
How to find the Potato Please puppy, buy Dog Food for $3, unlock Good Boy, and what the dog actually does around the depot.
The Potato Please puppy appears near the depot after the opening shifts. Buy Dog Food at the terminal for $3, approach the dog, and press E to feed it. That unlocks Good Boy. The dog recovers, moves around the yard, and can help with potatoes, but it is not a reliable automation solution.

The dog is one of the few warm things in the game. It is also easy to miss because it does not appear in the first minutes and because the terminal lists Dog Food as a minor purchase. If you are chasing achievements, $3 is the cheapest unlock in the game.
Where do you find the puppy?
The puppy appears near the depot after the warm-up shift. It is usually outside, around the yard or the path between the buildings. It may be lying in the snow and easy to mistake for part of the environment.
Walk the yard after the first shift and look for a small dog. If you hear barking, follow it. The dog may move between spots, so check the outdoor area before assuming it is gone.
The dog is not tied to a specific story choice. It appears as part of the normal progression, and feeding it is optional.
How do you feed the puppy?
- Open the terminal and buy Dog Food for $3.
- Find the puppy in the yard.
- Approach it and press E.
- Watch the feeding animation.
The Dog Food purchase is a one-time item in the terminal. If you do not see it, progress a little further and check again. The price is low enough that there is no reason to skip it.
Feeding the dog unlocks Good Boy immediately. You do not need to feed it multiple times for the achievement.
What does the puppy do?
After feeding, the dog recovers and starts moving around the depot. It can help with potatoes, and it becomes part of the daily routine rather than a one-off event.
The dog is not a machine. After 1.0.1, potatoes peeled by the dog do not count as machine output. That matters for Fully Automated and for any throughput plan that assumes the dog is a free peeler.
The dog can also get lost. If it disappears, the game may prompt you to find it. The 1.0.1 patch added the ability to mute the dog, but it still barks if it is lost, so you cannot silence the problem away.
The dog is a small time save and a cheap achievement. Buy the food early, feed it once, and then ignore it. Do not build a strategy around dog labor.
Does the puppy unlock A Heart of Gold?
No confirmed link. Good Boy is the feeding achievement. A Heart of Gold has a separate, still-unconfirmed trigger tied to an act of kindness. Feeding the dog is a kind act, but the community has not reproduced A Heart of Gold from that action alone.
The safest interpretation is that A Heart of Gold is a story kindness check, possibly involving Pavel or the dog, but not a simple repeatable step. Do not feed the dog expecting two achievements.
Can the puppy get lost?
Yes. The dog can wander or get lost, and the game may ask you to find it. Check the outdoor areas, the path, and the places where you first saw it. The dog does not permanently die from being lost; it is a find-and-return event.
If the dog is lost during a timed shift, do not abandon the line. Finish the shift, then look for it. The dog is not worth a quota failure.
Is the puppy worth feeding?
Yes, for three reasons:
- Good Boy is the cheapest achievement in the game.
- The dog adds a small amount of help around the depot.
- The feeding scene is one of the few character moments in an otherwise industrial game.
It is not worth building a strategy around. The dog is a companion, not a machine.
What else should you know?
The dog was part of the pre-release marketing, and it has a dedicated discussion thread on Steam. Players have reported it getting lost, barking repeatedly, and helping with peeling. The 1.0.1 patch addressed the barking with a mute option but kept the lost-dog behavior.
If you are writing a guide or a video, do not claim the dog peels at machine speed. It does not. The dog is a small helper with a lot of personality. The achievements guide → separates Good Boy from the still-unexplained A Heart of Gold so you do not chase the wrong unlock.
